My husband has worked at colleges for 18 years and can quickly tell which college freshmen have learned the art of accepting a consequence.  Taking responsibility for something we have done wrong does not come naturally and yet our children will need to do so effectively their whole lives.  Anyone gotten a speeding ticket lately?

Block Play Constructs a Math Mind

If you have a preschooler, you need a set of blocks. It is really that simple. Why are blocks a must? First, they are concrete.  Preschoolers aren’t ready to think in the abstract ways that worksheets require.  Plus, their developing writing skills (fine motor development) won’t allow them to think through writing as quickly as their minds work.  Blocks do.

"There's a monster under my bed" - Fears and anxieties in young children

Little children have fears that we as adults cannot understand.I remember that when my daughter was 2 and 3 she was very frightened of anyone dressed up e.g. clowns, santa clause, even a person dressed as a battery in the grocery store (to promote batteries) would all cause her to cling to me and bury her face into my shoulder. These dressed up people did not fit into her world and her response was to be afraid. I didn't push her, nor did I make a big deal of her fears and slowly over the years (she is now 7) her fears dissappeared.
